Is weed legal in Greece, on the mainland and on the islands?

Every summer the same question travels around the beach bars of Rhodes and Corfu: surely the islands are more relaxed than Athens? It is a comfortable assumption, and it is wrong. Greece runs one national law, and a beach on Zante answers to exactly the same rulebook as a street in Thessaloniki.

This guide sorts the real picture from the holiday rumour: what the recreational law says, how the medical route has worked since 2017, why the islands are not a loophole, and where hemp and CBD sit. The recreational law is still a criminal matter

The islands are not a separate country

Here is the part that trips up visitors most. Rhodes, Zakynthos, known to holidaymakers as Zante, Crete and Corfu are Greek territory, and Greek drug law applies to all of them without a tourist discount. There is no island exemption, no relaxed resort zone, and no local rule that overrides the national one.
