In the following lines, you will learn how hemp flour bread is made and how it differs from traditional bread.
What is hemp flour, and what are the benefits of bread made with it?
Before we talk about the preparation of bread, you will be interested to know how hemp flour is made, what nutritional properties it has and what kind of product you will get from using it in the kitchen. So let’s proceed in order and discover the origin of this particular flour, which is not so different from wheat flour. This product is obtained by grinding hemp Sativa or CBD cannabis seeds, seeds rich in beneficial properties. The fact that this flour is nutritionally very rich should come as no surprise since hemp seeds contain many minerals and fibre. These include potassium, calcium, vitamin E and vitamin B. Not only that, but their chemical composition also consists of some good essential fats for the cardiovascular system, such as Omega 3 and Omega 6.
Cannabis seeds are often used as a natural remedy for certain debilitating digestive system conditions, such as abdominal bloating and constipation; consequently, bread made from the flour obtained by grinding them is particularly digestible. In terms of taste and texture, bread with hemp flour is characterised by almost no alveolation and a toasted, slightly nutty flavour. Now that you know that this flour is nutritionally very complete and its main characteristics, let’s see how it is prepared.
Bread with hemp flour: here is the recipe for making it
As is customary in any good recipe, before discussing the bread preparation, let’s see what ingredients are needed, assuming you have to make bread for four people. Before putting your skills as a cannabis-friendly baker to the test, you will need to procure:
- 450 g of type 0 flour or, if you prefer, wholemeal flour;
- 30 g of hemp flour;
- 1 teaspoon of salt;
- a glass of water;
- some extra virgin olive oil;
- 1/2 cube of brewer’s yeast.
Contrary to what you might think, the procedure is quite simple; however, to obtain an appreciable result, it is essential to follow the various steps precisely. The first of these is bringing the dough to life. Start by dissolving the yeast in warm water. Then pour the flour, salt and water with the dissolved yeast into a bowl and mix everything until a compact, homogenous dough is obtained. You will now have to wait about an hour for the dough to rise, which should take place at room temperature. The ideal solution is to cover the dough with a cloth and place it inside the oven (turned off, for now). After this time, the dough will have doubled in volume. After a short second of kneading, place it in a baking tray and let it rest for another 30 minutes. Heat the static oven to a temperature of 200° C and, after coating the surface of the dough with a bit of olive oil, put the baking tray in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes. To maintain a good level of humidity, it is recommended to place a container with water in the oven. After half an hour of baking, you can take your hemp flour bread out of the oven and, after letting it cool, enjoy its unique, unmistakable taste.
What else you can do with hemp flour
As you have doubt guessed, a product that lends itself to preparing food such as bread can also be used for other dishes. Hemp flour can also make savoury and sweet products. Among the first courses, one of the most delicious (and we will soon talk about this in our blog) is undoubtedly pizza, but quiches are no joke! As for desserts, one can indulge in the preparation of cakes, biscuits, muffins and various sweets.
Hemp flour is a resource to be exploited in the kitchen for its incredible amount of nutritional properties and its taste. While waiting for new recipes that include this fantastic ingredient, we invite you to try your hand at baking bread. The result will not disappoint!
