CBD oil for cats: use, dosage and advice for our feline companions

Use and dosage of CBD oil for cats

CBD: a powerful ally in the treatment of various problems. But is it also suitable for cats?

If you have recently noticed a deterioration in your beloved cat’s state of health, you must be experiencing great concern and an almost unbearable sense of helplessness. You have taken him to the vet, but you notice that he is not the same as before. He is probably in pain, and you would like to do something to help him. Pain, especially chronic, is a heavy cross to bear, as it is for humans and cats. If neglected, it can lead your cat to let go, in many cases to the point of death. Even if his illness is incurable, don’t you wish there were something you could do to alleviate his suffering?

You may have already heard of CBD oil, but you may not know that it can also be an essential ally for the well-being of your animals. In this article, I explain how CBD oil can come to the rescue of your cat and how to use it in this regard. CBD oil to help your cat

What is CBD and how does it work for felines?

CBD oil for animals does not behave differently from CBD oil for humans. CBD (cannabidiol) is the active ingredient of cannabis that has no psychoactive effects on those who take it. Its beneficial properties are now recognised and make it suitable for treating specific ailments in our four-legged friends. It is also a simple supplement to improve their quality of life. Through its interaction with the cat’s endocannabinoid system, CBD stimulates the production of serotonin, also known as the feel-good hormone, and induces relaxing and pain-relieving effects. If you are considering giving CBD oil to your cat, keep in mind that animals are much more sensitive to this substance, so much so that cannabidiol products designed for them contain a considerably lower concentration of the active ingredient than those for humans. In addition, it is not recommended – for the sake of your feline friend – to start taking cannabidiol without first consulting your vet, who can give you the best advice based on your cat’s health condition. But let’s take a closer look at what benefits your cat can gain from CBD and whether it is safe for cats.

Is CBD oil safe? What benefits can cats derive from its use?

Let’s be clear: CBD oil is completely safe for cats. CBD oil is completely safe for cats The main reason why many people are starting to use CBD for their pets lies in the ability of cannabidiol to improve their quality of life. While CBD may not cure any ailments for good, it will certainly alleviate the symptoms and discomfort experienced by the cat. Many veterinarians agree that cannabidiol is not dangerous for cats. Still, I urge you to consider the situation on a case-by-case basis and consult your veterinarian before making any decisions. According to a 2020 study conducted by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, CBD oil – with CBDA added – appears to be a promising complementary therapy in veterinary medicine. The main properties of CBD, also concerning its use with animals, are anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving. In addition, cannabidiol is an excellent neuroprotectant and can be used successfully in treating convulsions, typical of epilepsy. The therapeutic properties of CBD oil, however, do not end there. It can help cats – and mammals in general – in the treatment of a whole range of other disorders, such as:

  • inflammatory bowel diseases;
  • inflammation of the urinary tract;
  • arthritis;
  • anxiety and irritability;
  • chronic pain;
  • lack of appetite;
  • fur and skin disorders.

But how do you know how much CBD to give your cat? We discuss this in the next paragraph.

How to dose CBD oil for cats?

Suppose you have given CBD to animals before. In that case, you may notice that the approximate doses I am about to provide you are considerably higher than those recommended for dogs, for example. These are not calculation errors. The reason lies in the number of receptors in felines, which is considerably less than in other mammals, such as dogs and humans. Consequently, the dose must necessarily be increased to achieve the same effects. We are talking about 2-4 mg CBD per 4-5 kg of weight for mild symptoms. If, on the other hand, your cat should, unfortunately, experience severe symptoms, such as cancer or epilepsy, the recommended dose would be 4-6 mg CBD per 4-5 kg weight. As is easy to deduce, the more severe the condition to be treated, the higher the dosage will have to be for the effects to occur. In any case, I recommend starting with low dosages and increasing them gradually, obviously paying attention to the animal’s response. You will know that you are close to the optimum dosage when you notice that the cat is calmer and happier. If you are having a problem getting the dosage wrong, don’t worry. Mammals very well tolerate CBD, and slight variations in the amount administered are not likely to cause any problems. Keep in mind, however, that you will have to wait 15 to 45 minutes to see the first effects in your cat. Avoid increasing the dose during this time. Be patient and observe. The effect of CBD will last several hours – 4 to 6 – depending on several factors, including the animal’s size, the extent of the disorder, the breed and the cat’s metabolism. But how to administer it? You can try putting it directly into his mouth with the help of a syringe – no needle! – or add it to your cat’s favourite food.
